Wake Up Call

Wake Up Call

Why this title?

Days after the events of September 11 devastated her life and home, Sandra began feverishly painting dozens of floral, pastoral scenes — of which this was the first, painted September 15, 2001.

As this series progressed, motifs and images from the September 11th attacks began to assert themselves in the work, beginning with Come to Dust.

The series grew from pastel landscapes into sprawling, visceral oil paintings of the tragedy.

This project culminated in the two largest, densest, and most haunting paintings of Sandra’s career, Absolute Zero: Monday and Absolute Zero: Tuesday. These two staggering works were completed onsite, from Sandra’s studio, overlooking the wreckage of the World Trade Center. They are the only paintings of their kind in the world.

This painting, given its thematic importance, is an honorary member of the September 11 series.
